Cybersecurity and Majors

My major is Public Health and my desire is to help people, whether individually or in vast groups. It relates to cybersecurity in many aspects, for instance you need to protect the data and research and information and manage it. Cybersecurity helps create a framework and infrastructure to help prevent cyber attacks on the systems and networks. It is also helpful in fostering effective information sharing, mitigate the risk of compromising vulnerabilities, especially during emergencies. Most hackers look to attack during a time of weakness or a vulnerable time, so when IT professionals are distracted such as during natural hazards.

Some other majors offered at ODU that relate to cybersecurity include Information Technology and Engineering. Information Technology being a huge aspect of cybersecurity in regards to compliance and security of data and systems to ensure all data is readily available. Especially when it involves data and information over the internet, cybersecurity helps protect the information and ensure it doesn’t land in the wrong hands. Business and Finance are other majors that are related to cybersecurity, most businesses nowadays have some sort of online and ecommerce portion, through online shopping or customer relationship management, a lot of information is online. Cybersecurity helps protect their information and ensure hackers don’t steal peoples personal and credit information. Engineering mentioned earlier of course needs cybersecurity when working with high level complex projects, securing the information and plans so that they do not get stolen or tampered with.
