My name is Carl Rumberg, I am a 22 year old cybersecurity major at Old Dominion University. I currently work as the warehouse manager of Lansing Building Products at the Norfolk branch. While school and work keep me busy, in my free time I enjoy spending time with my cats, dog, and friends.

I am wrapping up my last semester at ODU, with the summer 2023 semester being my final semester. I will graduate during the December commencement ceremony and likely continue my work at Lansing for a while to garner management experience before I jump into the cybersecurity field. I aim to spend at minimum two years as a manager before joining the cybersecurity field, and would one day like to work within application security.

The totality of my entrepreneurship experience stems from the CYSE 494 course. My groupmates and I worked together to come up with the idea of the next-generation of cybersecurity-hardened toxic fume sensors for usage within manufacturing/production environments. There were many potential issues brought forth from outside feedback, and we all worked well as a team to tackle said issues. The largest point that I learned from this experience is that I have much more to learn in regards to entrepreneurship. Past that, I have learned the massive importance of interdisciplinary thinking, as well as the necessity of having a diverse group of experts on an entrepreneurial team in order to adequately cover any issues that come along. Overall, the biggest take-away from this class for me is, again, the importance of knowing that experts from various fields are needed to solve interdisciplinary issues. Knowing when expert consultation is needed rather than overconfidence and google searching was a very humbling moment for me, and one that I will take into my career.

The innovation showcased throughout this site is that of a new type of smart sensor used to detect toxic fumes in production environments. Please view the other tabs to learn more.
