About Me

Hi! My name is Gavin Harrison and I am a freshman at Old Dominion University. Not only am I enrolled as a student here, but I am also an athlete on our Division I football team! I’m from Northern Virginia, but decided to come to ODU to further my academic and athletic potential. I have an undecided major, but I have a passion for math and science, and will probably major in something that uses both frequently. In my free time, I love to be outdoors hiking, skiing, swimming, or biking. I also love lifting, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family.

Ethical Considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing

A possible ethical consideration I got from reading these two articles is the privacy of digitized genetic information. Digitized DNA is extremely unique to each individual person, and therefore extremely valuable for hackers to steal. As stated in the second article, DNA can’t be replaced or changed once it is stolen, unlike passwords or SSNs. Once it is stolen, there’s almost nothing you can do about it. I think that if people start digitizing their genetic information, the best possible measures need to be taken to ensure the security and privacy of people’s genetic information. There will probably need to be some laws made to make sure that the correct measures are taken to ensure digitized DNA and genetic information. Without this happening, I don’t think many people will digitize their DNA.

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework

According to the reading, NIST Cybersecurity Framework is proving to be extremely useful to companies. It allows organizations to choose how they want to direct their improvement in cybersecurity risk management. The Framework can be used in many ways, and can be flexible by providing many different implementations to reduce risk over a broad spectrum, by also fitting your organizations policies or needs. In my future workplace, I would most likely use the framework to conduct regular risk assessments in the organization so they can be addressed and fixed, and keep the organization running as smoothly as possible.

Protecting Availability

As the CISO of my company, it is important that I implement measures to ensure the availability of our systems. To do this I will create an incident response team, that, with great training, incident awareness, communication, and teamwork, can resolve any incidents that may occur. As a team, we will create an incident response plan to quickly and effectively react and eliminate the threat, and establish policies to try to prevent anything from happening in the first place. We will prioritize different levels of incidents, depending on how threatening they are to the organization. Obviously, we will tend to the more serious matters first, and the less serious ones after. We will keep logs, have monitoring systems, and be attentive to any reports from our users. This will help ensure the availability of our systems by keeping any threats at bay.
