Greetings! Welcome to my portfolio. My name’s Hoang Nguyen. Please allow me to share some things about myself.

I was born in South Vietnam in 1995. My family and I moved to the States in 2001 with $50 in our pockets–specifically to Denver, Colorado. I knew only two English phrases that my father taught us: “I am hungry” and “I am thirsty”.  Denver was my home for a good 12 years before we moved again in 2013 to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where I currently reside.

I attended Tidewater Community College for two years, where I majored in Computer Science. After finishing up my studies there, I transferred to Old Dominion University where I continued my Computer Science studies. However, a part of me always knew that it wasn’t the right path for me, and recently, I changed my major to English. I am now a senior at Old Dominion University, studying Linguistics and hoping for a bright future.

There’s so much I could do that I haven’t set a definite goal in mind. However, even if I don’t have plans to do it for a lifetime, I think I’d like to teach kids to speak English who don’t know a word of it. I was part of the ESL program for a few years when I first came to the States, and many years later in life I got in touch with my old ESL teacher again. I thanked her for all she did for me, and I’d like to repay that by doing the same for others down the road.
