My name is Jarred Romero, I am currently working as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Journeyman in the United States Air Force. Here is a overview of my job as Bioenvironmental engineering journeyman. Bionevironmental Engineering has four main parts; Industrial Hygiene, Environmental, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear(CBRN) response, and Radiation. Industrial Hygiene is the main part of our job and includes identifying, analyzing, and controlling hazards individuals are exposed to occupationally. Hazard include noise, chemical, biological, radiation, thermal stress, and ergonomic stress. We recommend three types of controls engineering controls, administrative controls, and Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). Engineering controls range from replacing the hazard with something less hazardous to using ventilation system to remove the hazard. Administrative controls are training on how to avoid exposures to hazards or signs warning of the hazards. PPE include gloves, apron of specific materials, respirators, chemical googles, and hearing protection. Environmental includes routine water sampling for potential of hydrogen (pH), chlorine levels, and bacteriological presence in drinking water. CBRN response involves us determining what levels of constituents are present after an event to recommend the proper PPE levels for the other responders. Pictured below is us training for our response. Lastly radiation which is separate because of its importance and severity. This portion ranges from us tracking radiation exposures to clearing packages to ship.

Bioenvironmental engineering is giving me engineering experience that I can use to back up my CET degree either while I’m in the Air Force or working in the civilian side.
