Upon entering college, I found myself grappling with the decision between majoring in cybersecurity or computer science. This uncertainty cast a shadow over my early college years, leading me to commence my first semester as undeclared. The lack of a defined path left me feeling adrift, questioning my place in the collegiate environment, and fearing that I was squandering precious time amidst peers who had already chosen their majors. During this difficult period, confiding in friends and family and seeking advice from my counselor became crucial. As I considered the two fields of study, I came across strong reasons from either side. Computer science supporters praised its scope, highlighting its thorough examination of the technological environment. On the other hand, proponents of cybersecurity praised its narrow emphasis, saving me from the deluge of topics that come with computer science. Ultimately swayed by the allure of myriad opportunities and a desire for deeper immersion in the field, I elected to pursue computer science. However, my enthusiasm waned as I progressed into my sophomore year’s second semester, confronted with the daunting realization of the rigorous science and mathematics requirements essential for completing the degree. This revelation plunged me into uncertainty, as I grappled with my perceived inadequacies in these subjects.
I found myself in a situation that demanded a prompt solution. Thankfully, I sought counsel from friends, family, and my advisor, who assured me that it wasn’t too late to pivot my major. They encouraged me to refocus on my original aspirations and discard distractions that held no significance. Reflecting on their advice, I began prioritizing my passion over monetary concerns and external pressures. In my junior year, I made the decisive choice to switch my major to cybersecurity. The transition was swift, and I immediately developed a deep affection for this field. Unlike my previous studies, cybersecurity offered a singular focus on technology, devoid of extraneous subjects unrelated to the tech realm. While I acknowledge the importance of math and science in the technology sector, my heart yearned to delve into the intricate workings of technology itself. This newfound clarity propelled me forward, reigniting my enthusiasm for learning. With unwavering dedication, I immersed myself in cybersecurity coursework, relishing every opportunity to explore the dynamic landscape of technology. My decision to prioritize my passion has not only revitalized my academic journey but also reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career aligned with my true interests and aspirations.
