About Me
My name is Jennifer Wilson and I attend Old Dominion University as a speech language pathology and audiology major. It is my intention to serve as an innovator in the field of communication disorders. I intend to use my clinical research skills and continue to develop my critical thinking as I advance throughout my academic career. This will allow me to improve facilitation techniques and methods used in evidence based practice to create my own therapy plans. Research is a strength of mine because I am proficient in reading, interpreting, and summarizing peer-reviewed studies.
My main area of interest as I finish my undergraduate degree is the identification of communication disorders in infancy. I believe it is so important for experts to prioritize advancements in the development and application of technology used for the identification for speech, hearing, and language in the first two years of childhood. By using the knowledge presented in my childhood development courses, I believe there are ways to improve the validity and reliability of the assessments we use to identify potential communication disorders as applied to relevant diagnostic criteria. I also am interested in Aphasia, Dyslexia, ADHD, and stuttering. The clinical skills I developed throughout my undergraduate career are essential for applying and connecting the results presented in publications relevant to the field of speech language pathology as defined by ASHA’s defined scope of practice. Audiology is a field of study where my skills and course preparation are an asset in facilitating advancements for patient intervention. I am proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and have experience working with clients with hearing impairments. My undergraduate course curriculum provides me with supplemental understanding of technology used for identification, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing disorders. This can be applied to the clinical research to determine the most effective methods for delivering services to those I have the privilege of serving.
It is crucial to create connections with both our clients as well as other professionals in the field. Therefore, my innate ability to establish social rapport quickly and genuinely is an excellent asset that will make me a more effective speech language pathologist. Speech and language are areas that I have excelled in throughout my life; therefore, I am confident in my ability to provide a model for my clients as based on evidence based therapy plans that are developed and improved on a continuous basis. It is an honor and a privilege to embark on my academic journey as I take the next step towards becoming a professional. My next step is to clarify the areas of study that I intend to specialize in as an aspiring clinical researcher. With this on my mind, I hope to connect with other members of the professional community. In the transition phase between my undergraduate and graduate degree, I plan to seek out professional opportunities and gain clinical knowledge from my peers, professors, and relevant experts in the field of communication disorders.
