What are the costs and benefits of developing cybersecurity programs in business?

Cybersecurity programs are very beneficial to businesses. Cyber technology is increasing, therefore it makes it easier for people to hack into businesses and collect their information. Businesses are very vulnerable to email hacks. These cybersecurity programs make employees aware of the dangers in the cyber world and teach them how to attack them on site. Employees are sometimes clueless when it comes to combating cyber attacks because they either didn’t really learn how to effectively counter an attack or they never learned at all. These programs also teach awareness. For example Inspired E-Learning has a Security Awareness Training Program that is specifically for teaching employees what possible threats they can see ahead of time. This is beneficial because now employees will know what to look for when there has been an attack and how to react to it. Some of these programs also have simulations where they actually place employees in a situation. These simulations can give employees hands-on experience. The programs also give employees confidence when they do have situations like this. They feel empowered to be able to look at the problem, assess it and then fix it, if they can. The most important thing about these programs is that they really do help a business. The cost of a cybercrime can be extremely devastating to a business. If a business does undergo a cybercrime, there’s a chance that they can pay thousands to even billions of dollars. Not only will they lose money, but they may lose the confidence of their customers, which will also lead to the loss of money. Businesses should definitely invest in cybersecurity programs. It is very important to establish that cyber attacks need to be countered before the actual attack hits. It’ll be too late if it has already taken effect. (Choi, Kaplan, Krishnamurthy, and Lung) ‘

Describe three ways that computers have made the world safer and less safe.

Three ways that computers have made the world safer are safe traveling, fighting crime and the creation of monitoring tools. It is a lot easier to get to and from a destination now. For example, gps and emergency safety apps. If someone is traveling late at night they can use apps that provide gps tracking, they can just stay on call with someone, or they can call an uber instead of walking home by themselves at night. Fighting crimes is also a way that computers have made the world a better place. For example, at the airport they use scanners and also computers that dictate what seems to be a normal object in a suitcase or an abnormal object. In the precinct officers use computers to collect data on their suspects. On shows like the First 48, they use their social media to find the victims, their families and even the suspects. Nowadays computers are used to composite facial structures of victims who can’t be identified and suspects. Computers make more things accessible to life. For example now we can turn assignments in online, video call and other things.

Although they have done a lot for us, computers have also made life harder and unsafe. People have lost sense of real life due to computers. Computers have made it a lot easier to find out someone’s personal information and life. This also could give people a chance to harm those that they’ve found out about. Usually a lot of people connect all of their devices together nowadays so if somebody connects their computer to their phone and their computer gets hacked, the hacker now is connected and has all your information. Also along with this, computers have made it easier to commit crimes. Again with computers you can access social media and cyber bully people, hack into people’s bank accounts.

How should we approach the development of cyberpolicy and infrastructure given the “short arm” of predictive knowledge?

Everyone around the globe has become dependent on, and there I say addicted to, technology. Everything we do involves technology. Taking a class, contacting people, resumes are now online, gaming has evolved, banking, everything. Due to this increased growth of technology usage around the world, cybercrimes have increased at a rapid rate. At this increasing rate, it has become very difficult for not only society, but the government, to stay ahead, or on pace, with the new developing technology. Many attacks have happened to small businesses and big businesses that weren’t prepared enough to develop better approaches to these new cybercrimes. Imagine if the government could’ve been more prepared and stopped attacks like the Solar Sunrise of 1998, where a cyber attack was launched to seize control of over 500 government computer systems. It would be amazing if we were that prepared, but it is also nearly impossible.

Cyber Policies are very important to establish into society and our government. Although it is a very important thing to implement, it is also very difficult to do it due to the constant changes in technology. In addition to trying to combat the growth of technology, it is very difficult to understand the topic of cyber policy when it is also evolving. There have been many situations where businesses have thought they were prepared for an attack and just weren’t because it was something unexpected. Which means that new technology has become, kind of, unpredictable. The best way to approach these things is to just prepare. Be as aware as possible of attacks. During this time of technology “evolution” every company, big or small, needs to be prepared and implement these cyber policies. It is clear to me that the best way to get to grips with cyber policy is to just be conscious of new changes. We have got to try our hardest to keep up to date with everything.
