Food insecurity is a significant public health concern rooted in social and economic disparities. As apart of my Applied Practicum Experience, I had the opportunity to gain insight into the challenges of food insecurity in Chesapeake, Virginia area focusing particularly on the impact on vulnerable populations, including seniors. The project was birthed from my studies at Old Dominion University, where I examined the relationship between lifestyle patterns, nutrition, and health outcomes.

Background

My academic journey at Old Dominion University has been centered on public health, with a focus on Health Behavior and Health Promotion. I was drawn to the intersection of lifestyle patterns, nutrition, and health disparities. Through previous research experience, it became evident that food insecurity has implications on physical health and mental well-being, especially within minority groups.

This project reflects my desire to make an impact in my community. Chesapeake and South Norfolk are areas with significant food insecurity issues, particularly among seniors. I collaborated with Buffalow Family and Friends, an organization committed to addressing the needs of local seniors, and there I was provided an opportunity to better understand these issues.

Objectives

The goal of this practicum project was to develop and implement a strategy to combat food insecurity among seniors in Chesapeake and South Norfolk. My approach involved creating a booklet designed to engage key stakeholders, raise awareness, and increase resources to address the needs of this vulnerable population. I aim to increase community engagement and ultimately contribute to reducing food insecurity.

MPH 7: Assess population needs, assets and capacities that affect communities’ health
Objective: Conduct document review to assess the demographic characteristics, food insecurity level,
health indicators, and health needs in specific census tracks in Chesapeake, Virginia.

MPH 9: Design a population-based policy, program, project or intervention
Objective: Design a toolkit that will summarize the demographics, health needs, and BFF program
activities.

HPRO 4: Construct effective approaches to communicate or disseminate health promotion
content to relevant audiences.
Objective: Create a plain language booklet, written below an 8th grade reading level, that presents
evidence-based research around food insecurity issues and impacts experienced by low-income
populations in Chesapeake.

HPRO 5: Propose inclusion of relevant key stakeholders in a health promotion program.
Objective: Identify BFF community partners from Chesapeake to provide input during toolkit
development. Incorporate input and collaboration from relevant local stakeholders who can help
ensure the content is sound and culturally sensitive.

MPH 21: Perform effectively on interprofessional teams
Objective: Work effectively with BFF leadership, volunteers, and community stakeholders to
effectively accomplish the objectives of this practicum project.

Significance

This project is significant because it addresses a significant public health challenge that impacts the health of the South Norfolk and Chesapeake community. By focusing on seniors in Chesapeake and South Norfolk, the project targeted a group that is often overlooked. The booklet I created serves as a valuable tool for stakeholders, providing information, resources, and actionable steps to improve food security in these areas.
