Build Interpersonal Skills 

Advancing interpersonal skills is beneficial in the workplace because it gives you the ability to create relationships with the people around you. I will achieve this goal by observing, practicing, and reflecting. Interpersonal skills enable effective communication, build collaboration, and improve decision-making skills. Successful leaders communicate effectively with their team members by providing active listening and feedback as well as building empathy and understanding toward their employees. As a leader, it is important to consider other people’s perspectives because it creates a compassionate environment and maintains a harmonious workplace. When conflict arises, I want to be able to handle the problem effectively with the interpersonal skills I have obtained throughout my internship. 

Explore Different Career Options and Develop a Professional Network

During my internship, I am given the opportunity to achieve this goal by shadowing many different healthcare administration positions within Sentara.  Doing this will allow me to increase my exposure, build relationships, and learn new perspectives. Having career advice and support from different individuals throughout Sentara benefits me by gaining a clearer understanding of where I want to take my career.  Not only will networking allow me to share new ideas with others, but it will also open the door for job opportunities. I want to tune into as many business meetings during my internship to learn how to professionally express my ideas in the workplace. Shadowing others is a valuable opportunity and it can open my mind to new careers that I did not think about doing prior to the internship. I am thrilled to collaborate and network with others during my time with Sentara so I can explore career options and stay connected.

Expand Knowledge in Healthcare and Build Resume

I want to take the education I have gained through Old Dominion University and apply my knowledge to the real world. Doing that will allow me to see what skills I need to improve on.  I want to improve and learn more about monitoring budgets, utilizing strategic planning, and applying analytical skills in healthcare. I hope to get a new certification or enroll in a course that allows me to expand my knowledge of a specific skill that could be useful in my future career. This enables me to build my resume that will outline my accomplishments and skills that I acquired during my internship. I want to leave my internship with Sentara feeling confident and knowing that I will land a job.
