Hello! My name is Kaitlynn Vreeland and I am a Junior at Old Dominion University as a Psychology major with a minor in Business. The desire to understand others and how an individual’s behavior develops and changes is what pulled me towards wanting to be in the field of psychology. With many different specializations to follow I decided the path for me is Industrial and Organizational psychology. Working in several different industries and for a multitude of management staff, even being part of management at one point myself, I have wanted to understand the reasons there are certain attitudes and behaviors that workers show and how negative ones develop. In the future, focusing on I/O psychology would allow me to apply critical thinking skills and data research to identify and develop programs for either a specialty in performance assessment and recognition or organizational development and management. This course in cross-cultural psychology is important as it will allow me to expand my knowledge on how different cultures influence behavior, especially if it has any effects in a workplace environment. It will also help me understand the differences in cultures and how to best consult with companies for the benefit of their employees and the culture within the company itself. A quote that stuck with me is from German psychologist Hans Bender and he said, “Free yourself from the rigid conduct of tradition and open yourself to the new form of probability.”
