About Me

Hello, my name is Maria Lopez. I’m originally from El Paso, Texas. I lived there the majority of my life for 15 years. Up until my freshmen year in high school, we had to move to San Antonio, Texas for my dad’s job. During my time in high school, I meet my husband AJ in 8th period after not making any new friends. Soon after finishing high school and my first year of community college at Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas we got engaged, and married. My husband got orders to move to San Diego, California so we packed up our car and did our first road trip. Not going to lie we were just kids at the time. I was 19 and he was 21 when we first got our place, but we got to learn as we went on. Fast forward to 5 years, we have a dachshund name Lilah, she’s 3 years old, and loves to take up our entire bed to the point were we just got a king size bed just for her, so we all can have some space when we sleep. We also just moved here to Norfolk just this past Saturday. So, my stress levels were present with moving into our apartment, movers coming in and out with boxes, cable guy, AND school happening in one day. (I highly don’t recommend doing that).
During the years when living in San Diego, I was sort of lonely. We had no friends and no family, so I resorted to reading. There was a lovely library just down the street from where we lived, so I went there everyday for 2 hours just to get out the house. After a while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be in life, because my husband was already set with his in the Navy. I found out than I wanted to become a librarian.

For most of my life till maybe 8th grade I had struggled to read, and understanding what it was that I was reading. So you can say that reading a book wasn’t my thing at the time. But when it came to being alone, reading was what helped me get past those rough days. That was when I went back to school to become a librarian (so I thought). My advisor had told me to take Psychology as my major and just go from there. I thought it was a bit strange, but hey why not? I had this Professor who loves teaching psychology and that was what did it for me. I ended up staying with Psychology as my major for my Bachelors, and if I do choose to continue my education a little more I plan to get my Masters in Library of Science to then become a librarian for the public or in an elementary school! I took this class because this is my first semester at an University and my advisor recommended this class to me. I guess you can say it’s a stepping stone because all this is brand new to me, but I hope to have a great experience from all this in the future!
