About Me

My name is Meghan Monaghan and I studied to Spanish at ODU. I love to travel and have been to Italy, Honduras, and Costa Maya. My love of travel and language is why I wanted to become a Spanish teacher in the first place. I want to show my love of language and culture with my students. I have observed in many Spanish classrooms ranging from Spanish 1-AP. Observing the different classes helped me find out the proficiency the students are at in those classes and what is expected of them. I also learned new ways to engage my students in the classroom. One teacher used an app called GIMKIT for grammar practice and the students loved it! I interned in a Pre-k/ special education class for two years and the experience helped me develop the person I am today. Teaching in an inclusive class for two years, I had to develop different strategies so that all my students could understand the lesson. When teaching colors, for example, I would lay different colored eggs down and asked the students to pick up the color egg I asked for. For my student who could not speak or walk, I picked up the two eggs and asked him which was pink, and he would point. For my student with down syndrome, he was more of a repetition learner, I would pick up the eggs and have him tell me the colors repeatedly and he would get it right away. It was hard at times trying to make a lesson that fit everyone’s needs, but working in the inclusive class helped me learn strategies on how to teach every type of learner.
