Final Reflective Letter

This class has been one of the most challenging courses I have taken since beginning my degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. While I believe that my learning can be demonstrated in the submitted homework and the tests, I realize that this course requires a tremendous amount of focus and perseverance to have a successful outcome. My improvement of understanding the material for the class came much later in the semester, and therefore was not the best it could have been at the time. The material within the course will definitely intersect with the current field I am in, as it is related to facilities engineering in a healthcare setting. The knowledge I have gained here will give me a better understanding of the boilers, air-handling units, pumps, chillers, and many other aspects of our central plant in the facilities. I would be first to admit that this is only a bird’s eye view of everything involved with this equipment, but it has been extremely helpful none the less.

As for my professional career, I do believe this course of study will be quite helpful. While I will not be as exposed to the equipment personally, I will be able to better understand the systems when I interact with the teams that actually utilize the equipment the most at my place of employment. Of course, there is so much more to learn on the mechanical side of things, and I have great respect for people who work with and understand the complexities of the intricate systems.

I can say that, if I were starting this class again, I would try to focus on more practice problems from the start. There are so many variables and formulas involved, that I quite often had a difficult time figuring out just where to start when solving the problems. While challenging, I can say that I enjoyed the class and the way that it was taught. It is a lot of work and material to cover, but will only lead to helping me to become a better engineer in the end.
