I am currently taking my first semester of classes toward my MLIS degree at ODU, which I will add to the BA in Psychology I have from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have worked as a library assistant in the Youth and Family Services department of a public library branch for the past eight years, and worked as a preschool teacher prior to that. In my current position I plan and develop family programming, including virtual weekly episodes in partnership with a local television station. I am passionate about the topics of diversity and representation in literature, especially for children and young adults. My aspiration is to become a YFS/teen librarian or branch manager after completing my master’s degree.
I am a married mother of a teen, a tween, and a cat. I’m originally from North Carolina, but spent five years living in Michigan and now reside in Chesapeake, Virginia. I have also traveled all over the world, particularly Europe where I have many extended family members. I am a first generation American, born after my parents emigrated from England in the 1970’s. This dual culture experience has shaped my life since childhood, and remains a large part of my identity. I am happiest outside, experiencing trees and trails and the mountains, or curled up on my couch with my cat and a good book. In addition to reading for pleasure, I also read YA literature in order to provide Reader’s Advisory information to library customers. My favorite genres are historical fiction, fantasy/escapism YA books, occasionally present-day fiction, and nonfiction topics such as parenting, self improvement, vegetarianism, and healthy lifestyles.
