About Me

My name is Nicholas Dorsey and I am a graduating senior in the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity program at Old Dominion University, class of 2026. My path into cybersecurity did not start in a classroom, it started in 2018 when I was serving in the United States Navy forward deployed. Over the next three years, I worked my way up to First Class Petty Officer, earning expertise in quality assurance, aircraft maintenance leadership, non-destructive inspection, and regulatory compliance across multiple commands and deployments.

What I realized during my journey is that the skills which made me successful in uniform, critical thinking under stress, perspective taking, and adaptive leadership, are the same skills that apply directly to Cybersecurity Governance, Risk, and Compliance. I didn’t want to simply be someone who passed certs. I wanted to know why they exist, who they’re meant to protect, and how to implement them where it matters.

One thing I enjoyed about the Cybersecurity program at ODU was learning to tackle complex, real word problems, with an interdisciplinary approach. It provided me an academic foundation for things I was already practicing. Ethics, cyber law/policy and interdisciplinary courses have honed my analysis when breaking down problems. I feel fully equipped to join the GRC field in cybersecurity with technical expertise and professional discretion.

I am Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certified as of Jan 2026. I want to work in Cyber GRC and project management where I hope to help find gaps, trace it to the root cause, fix it correctly, and build controls to ensure it won’t happen again. With this portfolio, I will show that I am already there.
