My name is Owen Yarussi. I was born on July 14, 2005, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I play baseball at Old Dominion University, and I have to manage my sports and schoolwork every day. Being around sports a lot when I was growing up had a big impact on who I am now, both as an athlete and as a person who talks to others.
Sports have always been a big part of my life. Being a student-athlete taught me the value of discipline, consistency, and preparedness. These are all skills that are useful in the workplace as well. Playing baseball in college has taught me how to be a leader, be responsible, and work hard. These are all things that affect how I approach assignments like my Sport Journal and my broader interest in sports communication.
My family has also been a big part of my athletic path. My older sister was a gymnast at Penn State, and her dedication to her sport inspired me to work hard at sports as well. My mom has also been a big help to me. She has always been there for me in school and on the field. Their influence still makes me want to do my best both on and off the field.
We made this sport journal with WordPress, and the process included making a clean, professional site that can evolve throughout the course of the semester. I chose WordPress because it is extensively used in the media and in business, which makes it a good place to show off written work about sports. This first entry marks the beginning of the journal and sets the stage for subsequent entries, thoughts, and analyses.
This sport journal will be a growing portfolio of my work over the course of the semester. I want to utilize it to talk about ideas, share what I’ve learned, and get involved in discussions about sports culture, media, and athletics. This site should show not only my love of sports but also my ability to speak clearly and professionally, which are important abilities in the sports world.
