From Rebellion to Realization
Growing up in a household where both of my parents served as Information Systems Security Officers in the U.S. Navy, technology was always present. I would hear my mother talk about network security, encryption, and access control, but at the time, it all felt distant to me. My mother introduced me to entry level networking even, however, I wanted to do my own thing. I had a free spirit, a rebellious nature that pushed me to seek a different path.
For a long time, I did not see technology as central to my life. I was more focused on personal expression and independence than on following in my parents’ footsteps. While they valued structured security frameworks, I craved spontaneity. I wanted to explore, to create, and to experience life without being confined to a traditional career path.
It wasn’t until I fully grasped how much technology could shape my future that my perspective shifted. I began to see not just the constraints of technology but also its endless possibilities—the way it could empower, protect, and transform lives. This realization didn’t happen overnight, but when it did, it changed everything. In January 2024, I made a definitive
choice: I would pursue a career in technology, specifically cybersecurity, at the bachelor’s degree level. That decision marked the beginning of a journey that was both personal and professional—one where I would combine my independent nature with a structured, technical field that had endless room for innovation and discovery.
Academic Foundations and Research
When I enrolled at Old Dominion University as a Cybersecurity major, I had no idea how much I would come to love this field. What had once seemed like a rigid career choice suddenly became an exciting challenge. I immersed myself in courses
like Cryptography, Cybersecurity Fundamentals, and Networked Systems Security, where I learned about encryption techniques, authentication methods, and threat analysis.
One of the most transformational experiences in my academic journey so far has been my participation in the Undergraduate Cyber Research Program. I conducted an analysis of Apple’s user security policies, specifically evaluating the effectiveness of the App Store’s guidelines in protecting user data. This research was not just another class project—it was a moment of validation. I realized that cybersecurity wasn’t just about policies and codes; it was about real-world impact. My research is now published and accessible internationally, which is an accomplishment I never imagined when I first started this journey. I now see cybersecurity as more than just a career—it’s a field where I can innovate, protect, and make a difference. The paper can be found in the Research Program page under COVA CCI.
Beyond my coursework, I began to lead a cybersecurity study group, where we collaborate on coursework and prepare for the CompTIA Security+ certification. This experience has allowed me to develop my leadership, teamwork, and mentorship skills, reinforcing my commitment to helping others grow alongside me.
Discovering a Passion for Programming
As I delved deeper into cybersecurity, I found myself increasingly drawn to programming. Learning Python, Java, and Swift opened my eyes to a new way of thinking—one that combined logic, creativity, and problem-solving. At first, programming felt foreign, but as I continued practicing, I began to enjoy the process of building, debugging, and optimizing code. I realized that cybersecurity and software development are deeply interconnected. Secure software engineering is critical to preventing vulnerabilities at the foundation of applications and systems. This understanding led me to a new goal: I want to pursue my masters degree in Software Engineering.
Now, I am excited about the possibilities of combining my cybersecurity expertise with software development skills. Whether it’s developing secure applications, automating security processes, or contributing to open-source security tools, I know that programming will play a vital role in my future career.
Real-World Experience: Bridging Theory and Practice
Beyond academics, I sought hands-on experience to apply my skills in real-world settings. Working as an IT Help Desk Student Technician at Old Dominion University, I gain practical knowledge in technical troubleshooting, access control, and network security administration. This role exposed me to real security challenges, reinforcing the importance of risk mitigation and proactive defense strategies.
I further expanded my skills as a Cyber Consultant Intern at the Coastal Virginia Center for Cyber Innovation (COVA CCI). This internship allowed me to conduct security risk assessments, identify vulnerabilities, and develop strategic cybersecurity recommendations for small-medium sized businesses and non-profit organizations in the Hampton Roads Area. One of my most impactful contributions was designing an employee cyber awareness training program, which educated staff on threat mitigation, security best practices, and policy compliance. At every step, I saw how cybersecurity extended far beyond just technical expertise—it required problem-solving, communication, and strategic thinking. These experiences solidified my belief that I had found my purpose.
Looking Ahead: Merging Cybersecurity, Computer Science, and Software Engineering
Reflecting on my journey, I see that my rebellious spirit and my parents’ influence both played crucial roles in re-shaping my path. While I initially rejected the world of technology, I now embrace it fully – on my own terms. I don’t just want to work in cybersecurity; I want to make an impact, drive innovation, and contribute to national security efforts. As I prepare for graduation and the next phase of my career, I am excited to continue gaining hands-on experience in cybersecurity risk management, network defense, and ethical hacking. At the same time, I am eager to strengthen my programming skills and pursue a master’s degree in Software Engineering.
I look forward to discovering how I will combine my cybersecurity, computer science, and software engineering expertise in my future career. Whether it’s through developing secure applications, implementing AI-driven threat detection, or innovating new security solutions, I believe that my interdisciplinary approach will give me a unique advantage to contribute in the field. My journey into technology was not linear. I didn’t start out wanting this career—but now, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Final Thoughts
This essay is more than just a reflection—it is a testament to my growth, resilience, and determination. I may have once resisted the structured world of technology, but today, I see it for what it truly is: a field full of innovation, challenges, and limitless possibilities. Cybersecurity is a career, a responsibility, and a journey I am eager to continue – now, with software engineering as part of my future.
