As an evaluator, I have chosen to conduct a program evaluation for the Newington Clothes Closet Program for Gloucester County. This organization is a nonprofit organization that serves the citizens of Gloucester County and its surrounding counties. Their central office is located in the church office of Newington Baptist Church and their office hours are from 9 am to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The distribution center hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 1st Wednesday and Saturday of each month. Individuals inquiring about this organization or its services can contact program directors Mary J. Young and Barbara Verdon via Newington’s Church office at (804) 693-2349. This organization provides its clients and surrounding counties with such serves as clothing distribution, religious support, and connects them with program directors for their local food bank. After contacting program directors Ms. Young and Mrs. Verdon, I obtained their permission to evaluate their non-profit organization, their services, and its staff. At this point, I informed the Ms. Young and Mrs. Verdon that the focus of my evaluation is to determine how much of a positive impact this facility is having within their clients lives and within their community?
In order to provide this non- profit organization with accurate results from my evaluation, I have informed them that my evaluation will included such strategies as conducting observations, distributing questionnaire’s, and interviewing staff. By implementing these various strategies, I will be providing stakeholders with the necessary data to determine if this non-profit organization and its staff’s interaction with their clients truly has a positive or negative impact in their clients lives and within their community. For these program directors and stakeholders involved in this non-profit organization, their positive interaction with their clients is key element to the success of their program and coincides with their mission statement which is “Love your neighbor as Yourself.” Therefore, the main purpose of this organization is to positively impact the individuals within its community and surrounding communities, while meeting their physical, spiritual, and nutritional needs. This non- profit organization currently serves a population consisting of 38,000 individuals ranging in ages from 5 to 95 years old.
Their clientele consists of individuals ranging from low-income and middle-income families, individuals from the homeless community, and mental impaired individuals. On average a yearly income for clients receiving services from this non- profit organization ranges from 15,000 to 40,000 per household. Along with servicing clients for various incomes, this organization also serves clients from different ethical backgrounds. Clients can reach this organizations distribution center by traveling north on George Washington Memorial Hwy for approximately 10 miles until reaching the intersection of George Washington Hwy and Main Street. It is at this intersection that clients will make a right-hand turn and the distribution center is located on the right-hand side of the intersection in the old sanctuary of Newington Baptist Church. Clients enter the distribution center through a set of wooden doors, where they will find a well-organized facility that supplies the clothing needs for each member of the family within the client’s household. Some of the items located within this facility consists of winter and fall jackets, men, women’s, and children’s clothing apparel, and a select of footwear for the whole family.
After visiting their distribution center and interviewing with program directors Ms. Young and Mrs. Verdon, it was clear that their main objective is to positively restore their clientele’s self-worth. As a social worker, restoring a client’s self-worth is the key component in helping them become more productive individuals within society and to overcoming difficult situations.
