Lietz, C., & Hodge, D. (2013). Incorporating Spirituality Into Substance Abuse Counseling: Examining the Perspectives of Service Recipients and Providers. Journal of Social Service Research, 39(4), 498-510.
Incorporating Spirituality Into Substance Abuse focuses on the importance of spirituality and how it can relate to substance abuse counseling. The point of this article is to highlight the significance of a client’s spirituality in assisting them recovering from a substance abuse problem in peer groups. Western Tidewater Community Service Board serves a wide variety of people who are both religious and non-religious. This article will provide me with information about incorporating religion in services. I plan to use this information to formulate questions about the inclusion of a person’s beliefs into the services they receive. Peer groups are very common at Western Tidewater so I believe that this will be very beneficial to reference when evaluating my stakeholders.
Lenoue, S., & Riggs, P. (2016). Substance Abuse Prevention. Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America, 25(2), 297-305.
Substance Abuse Prevention has several key points. Drug abuse is a common issue among the youth in America, additional research is needed to effectively assist in intervening at the early stages of drug abuse, and prevention interventions are classified as universal (population level), selective (targeting at-risk individuals), or indicated (targeting individuals showing early signs and symptoms of the illness).”Heading 2”. This article also touches on different youth programs as well as school-based prevention strategies and non-school based prevention strategies. An important part of Westerns Tidewaters mission is serving substance abuse clients and they have an amazing youth program that I got the opportunity to volunteer at recently where I provided peer counseling to teens who have previously had substance abuse issues. I got the opportunity to talk to some of the directors about their strategies so I believe this article will provide more information about some of the things that they are currently doing as well as serve as a window for me to ask questions about the future of their substance abuse prevention efforts.
Eggertson, L. (2011). Lack of workplace mental health resources increases pressure on health care system. CMAJ : Canadian Medical Association Journal = Journal De L’Association Medicale Canadienne, 183(12), E767-E768.
Lack of Workplace Mental Health Resources Increases Pressure on Health Care System is about the lack of mental health services offered in the workplace. It provides jaw dropping statistics about mental health in the workplace. Only 22% of employees that were surveyed by the group received mental health information from their jobs. Of the 22%, 82% of them did not access workplace support. I believe this will allow me to formulate great questions about Western Tidewater Community Service Boards shareholders. I will use my findings to have them explain their efforts in ensuring that their employees are not suffering from mental health issues. Being that human services can be an emotionally taxing field; it is important that the employees of this organization are being taken care of so that they can provide the best possible service to their clients.
Mercier, C., & Picard, S. (2011). Intellectual disability and homelessness. Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 55(4), 441-449.
Intellectual disability and Homelessness is a peer reviewed article that covers research conducted about the correlation of people with intellectual disabilities and homelessness. This article includes stories of real people who have intellectual disabilities and face extreme poverty as well as homelessness. The main categories that this article is broken into are as follows: Background, which points out the correlation between intellectual disabilities and homelessness have been proven, however, little is known about it. Aims describes the people in the articles living situations as well as their history. It also contrasts differences such as gender and residential status. Methods include the data that was collected from “an anonymous chart summary “. “Abstract para. 1” Results show the outcome of the study which further proves the relation between homelessness and intellectual disability. The conclusion provides knowledge on what could be done to combat this issue. This relates to Western Tidewater because they offer intellectual disability services as well as assist people in poverty. This will allow me to compare the data from this article to the answers I receive from their shareholders.
Fong, H., Alegria, M., Bair-Merritt, M., & Beardslee, W. (2018). Factors associated with mental health services referrals for children investigated by child welfare. Child Abuse & Neglect, 79, 401-412.
This peer reviewed article named Factors associated with mental health services referrals for children investigated by child welfare has a very self-explanatory name. This article covers data of children 2 to 17 years old from the Second National Survey of Child Adolescent Well-being. (para. 1) The article includes information about the decreased odds of caseworker referrals for minority groups including African American children versus Caucasian children and lack of insurance versus private insurance. Factors associated with mental health services referrals for children investigated by child welfare is relevant to Tidewater Community Service Boards mission as they have services specifically for youth. It would be beneficial to my evaluation to see how Western Tidewater compares to the data in this article.
Hartwell, S., Deng, X., Fisher, W., Siegfriedt, J., Roy-Bujnowski, K., Johnson, C., & Fulwiler, C. (2013). Predictors of Accessing Substance Abuse Services Among Individuals With Mental Disorders Released From Correctional Custody. Journal of Dual Diagnosis, 9(1), 11-22.
Predictors of Accessing Substance Abuse Services Among Individuals With Mental Disorders Released From Correctional Custody is an informative article that covers mental disorder, substance abuse, criminal justice, history of substance abuse treatment services, ex-inmates, and mental illness (para. 2 keywords) . More specifically, the article compares the correlation of population to mental illness and substance abuse. This article analyzes the data collected from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections about behavioral and mental disorders, and criminal justice variables over a two-year period. It is unclear if Western Tidewater offers services for people transitioning into civilian life after being locked up, but I think this article will provide great resources for me to use to understand how they plan to compete with agencies that do offer these type of services.
