{"id":852,"date":"2012-09-01T11:43:23","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T15:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.borgodu.com\/?p=852"},"modified":"2012-09-01T11:43:23","modified_gmt":"2012-09-01T15:43:23","slug":"a-new-project-in-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/BORG\/2012\/09\/01\/a-new-project-in-the-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"A new project in the Arctic."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u00a0are all very excited to be have been awarded a new grant from <a title=\"NSF OPP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/dir\/index.jsp?org=OPP\">NSF Office of Polar Programs<\/a>! The title of our new project is &#8220;Warming and irradiance measurements in the Arctic: Determining the link between solar energy absorption and surface warming through long term observations.&#8221; This project will look at the connection between seasonal warming of arctic surface waters and the absorption of solar energy. We will be measuring temperature and light both in the ice and the water column at hourly time intervals using a new buoy system, in addition we will add a fluorometer at 5m depth in the water which will help us identify absorbing\u00a0compounds such as phytoplankton and coloured dissolved organic material. Our collegues in this work areDr&#8217;s <a title=\"Mike Steele\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apl.washington.edu\/people\/profile.php?last_name=Steele&amp;first_name=Mike\">Mike Steele<\/a> and <a title=\"Bonnie Light\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apl.washington.edu\/people\/profile.php?last_name=Light&amp;first_name=Bonnie\">Bonnie Light<\/a> from the Applied Physics Lab at University of Washington, and <a title=\"Pacific Gyre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificgyre.com\/\">Pacific Gyre<\/a> who will make the buoys for us.<\/p>\n<p>As we get to\u00a0travel back to the Arctic for this project there is a lot of\u00a0excitement in the lab, everyone wants to see polar bears. I&#8217;ll post more information as we progress with this project, we will be making the data from the buoys available in near real time, and will also develop a lesson plan for teachers.
