They were designed for the one computer classroom and users with\u00a0 limited experience with GIS.\u00a0 The interactive activities can also be used by individual and pairs of students. As with any lesson, preparation is the key&#8211;preview the activity and anticipate challenges your students may encounter. Note the use of the term inquiry. Maps only answer questions if ask them.\u00a0 Examine the diagram of the geoinquiry process. Maps are the tool geographers use to examine spatial relationships.<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/MapsRUS\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1329\/2017\/09\/geoskills.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-869 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/MapsRUS\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1329\/2017\/09\/geoskills.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong> Spatial Variation\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nHow are things distributed on the landscape?<br \/>\nWhat patterns are observed?<br \/>\nHow does the distribution of attributes differ within and between maps?<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">Spatial Interaction<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nHow are places connected?<br \/>\nWhich people, goods and ideas move from one area to another?<br \/>\nHow does the physical landscape facilitate or impede interaction?<br \/>\nHow do people \/government policies upport or inhibit interactions?<br \/>\nWhy do people move?<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Spatial Association<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Which &#8220;things&#8221; have a similar spatial distribution?<br \/>\nHow are &#8220;variables&#8221; related?\u00a0 e.g., settlements and rivers; per capita GDP and life expectancy<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">To what extent do those relationships help to answer the &#8220;why there&#8221; question?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are some basic GIS skills that will equip you with techniques to modify the maps for further exploration.
