autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>ODU encourages and supports research, teaching, and outreach on issues related to <em>climate change and sea level rise<\/em> <em>resilience<\/em> including sustainable building, development of alternative energies, understanding changes in the ocean, public policy, and planning, and communicating and engaging the community in informed decision making. \u00a0Evidence of ODU\u2019s interdisciplinary approach to <em>climate change and sea level rise resilience<\/em> includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty in the College of Arts and Letters and College of Science developed children\u2019s plays and weekend events that demonstrate the unique ways to communicate climate change and sea level rise to a young audience.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty in the College of Business and the College of Health Sciences address the socio-economic impacts of climate change and sea level rise including insurance and risk management, and risks associated with community and public health.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty from the College of Education and the College of Science formed a unique collaboration, Monarch Teach, which prepares the next generation of science and math teachers.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty from the College of Education, College of Arts and Letters, and ODU\u2019s Social Science Research Center address communication and stakeholder engagement by surveying the community\u2019s beliefs, knowledge, and actions taken to address local reoccurring flooding events.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty from the College of Engineering, College of Sciences, and Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center focus on issues related to critical infrastructure threats and engineering solutions, as well as model coastal physical oceanographic changes in ocean currents and levels of acidification.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty across multiple departments work with Virginia\u2019s Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), Virginia Sea Grant, Wetlands Watch, and the City of Norfolk in support of events, summits and workshops, including the Dutch Dialogues that brought together experts on urban water to discuss design solutions for the future. College of Continuing Education and Professional Develop is poised to support faculty-developed courses aimed at enhancing community and government relationships.<\/li>\n<li>ODU BLAST student learning workshop outcomes mapped to Virginia Department of Education High School (9-12) Standards of Learning for Environmental Literacy\u2013Sustainability: Earth Science, Biology, Physics, Math, Algebra I, Family\/Community Life Education, and Task Team Education <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/ODUBLAST2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1432\/2016\/03\/ODU-BLAST-workshop-grid-mapped-to-Virginia-Department-of-Education-Standards-of-Learning-for-high-school.pdf\">ODU BLAST workshop grid &#8211; mapped to Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning for High School<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Time Line of Significant ODU Projects and Events Related to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Resilience <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>2010 &#8211; Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative (CCSLRI). <\/em>This interdisciplinary initiative included teaching and research faculty from all six academic colleges in the exploration and development of relevant topics and projects.<\/li>\n<li><em>2011 &#8211; Sustainable Development Institute. <\/em>Old Dominion University and Hampton University co-sponsored a team of faculty and students, Team Tidewater Virginia, who participated in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, an international competition that challenges collegiate teams to design and build affordable, sustainable, and visually-appealing solar-powered homes.<\/li>\n<li><em>2012 \u2013 Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise and Adaptation Forum. <\/em>ODU began a partnership with Virginia Sea Grant and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission to host quarterly meetings bringing together professionals in adaptation including government staff, scientific experts, private sector engineers, and other stakeholders for regional coordination and to share adaptation best practices.<\/li>\n<li><em>2013 \u2013 Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography<\/em> &#8211; <em>groundbreaking research.<\/em> A group of ODU oceanographers identifies that the acceleration of sea level rise between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Boston may be due to a diminished flow of the Gulf Stream.<\/li>\n<li><em>2013 \u2013 Dominion Virginia Power Solar Partnership Program.<\/em> Over 600 solar panels were installed on the rooftop of ODU\u2019s Student Recreation and Wellness Center.\u00a0 The solar panels generate power for approximately 35 homes and are tied to ODU\u2019s photovoltaic research laboratory<\/li>\n<li><em>2014 &#8211; Mitigation and Adaptation Research Institute (MARI). <\/em>The aim of this institute is to provide practice-relevant knowledge to government, military, and the private sector to help cope with the impacts of climate change and sea level rise coastal zones.<\/li>\n<li><em>2014 \u2013 Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Planning Pilot Project. <\/em>TechSurge kicked off the White House-supported \u201cPilot Project\u201d that aimed to bring different levels of government and industry together to coordinate research and adaptation planning to address sea level rise.<\/li>\n<li><em>2014 \u2013 Bipartisan Federal Congressional Delegation Discussion.<\/em> ODU was the first site in the United States to host a bipartisan federal congressional delegation discussion on sea level rise led by Senator Tim Kaine.<\/li>\n<li><em>2015 \u2013 Norfolk Resilience Strategy.<\/em> ODU supported the development and announcement of <em>Norfolk\u2019s Resilience Strategy<\/em>, a 60-page document that was released to the public.<\/li>\n<li>2<em>015 \u2013 U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, Address. <\/em>Old Dominion University hosted <em>S. Secretary of State, John Kerry<\/em>, who delivered a speech on Climate Change and National Security.\u00a0 In his address, the U.S. Secretary applauded the ODU faculty and students in their collective efforts on multiple issues related to climate change and sea level rise resilience.<\/li>\n<li><em>2016 \u2013 Housing and Urban Development National Disaster Resilience Competition (HUD-NDRC).<\/em> ODU convened and coordinated the Housing and Urban Development National Disaster Resilience Competition (HUD-NDRC) in partnership with the Common Wealth of Virginia.\u00a0 The Commonwealth of Virginia was awarded $120.5 million, the third largest award in the national competition.
