COVID-19<\/h2>\n

The current COVID-19 pandemic is an evolving and unpredictable situation that is limiting travel worldwide.\u00a0 Part of our planning for the 2022 Philippines programs includes adhering to ever changing requirements set by participating academic institutions and governmental agencies of the US and the Republic of the Philippines as these respond to the pandemic.\u00a0 The safety of students and staff is paramount in this process.\u00a0 We are exploring alternatives to program activities should it be determined that international travel will not be possible.<\/strong><\/h6>\n

International Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/h2>\n

Opportunities are available for motivated undergraduate students to learn and explore the fields of molecular ecology and genomics through participation in the Philippine PIRE project. This international Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) will provide stud<\/span>en<\/span>ts summer research experience in the field and the laboratory, theoretical and hands-on <\/span>training in advanced molecular methodology<\/span>, and immersion in the culture of the Philippines. Currently the REU program is for students from the following participating institutions: Old Dominion University, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, Rutgers University, and Arizona State University.\u00a0 We regret that we are not able to accept applications for students from non participating institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Philippines International Research Experience for Students<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

‘Omics and Bioinformatics Training<\/h2>\n

The PIRE project is providing training in the theory and techniques of genomics to local scientists, working professionals and university students. <\/span>Our ‘Omics and Bioinformatics Workshop in the Philippines is a two-week intensive course that includes lectures and hands-on experience. The training refreshes participants knowledge of genetics.\u00a0 It then introduces participants to the software tools and computing techniques necessary to process the vast amount of information contained in a genome.\u00a0 Participants practice these techniques with our instructors’ actual research data. The training continues with interested students pursuing a genomics project with guidance from PIRE personnel. The aim is to inspire collaboration between young scientists from the US and the Philippines.<\/span><\/p>\n
