Discussion – Opportunities for Workplace Deviance

Q:

How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Cyber technology has created many ways to be deviant in the workplace. From using tech like your phone or headphones inappropriately to stealing company data or installing malware into the network, the options for a clever, disloyal employee are numerous. With the latter, however the potential for severe or lasting damage is high. An employee or ex-employee could have any reason for acting out in a sense of revenge as well; they could do so in a quiet manner, undetected unless directly caught. For instance, because they didn’t receive the bonus or promotion they wanted, they could one day act in spite by bringing a USB drive with malware on it and plugging it into their workstation to infect the machine and possibly the network, dependent on what kind of malware is involved. In another case, the employee could steal valuable information from their company and use it for their own benefit, selling it off or making use of it themselves. Sadly, as technology evolves at a relentless rate, I fear this problem will likely only get more difficult to deal with or prevent.
