There are many ethical issues that could arise when storing the information of individuals electronically. Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are the most important things to consider when protecting data. The electronic storage of an individual’s information could lead to the ethical issue of an employee stealing customer data without any protocols in place to detect such actions. Additionally, a companies’ lack of proper updating is another ethical issue that could compromise the confidentiality of their customers’ sensitive information. The integrity of data can also be vulnerable to human error; this is another ethical issue that could lead to customer information being tampered with intentionally, or simply just being improperly inputted due to negligence of employees. Companies’ lack of investment in a robust cybersecurity system could be another ethical concern faced when storing electronic data. Customers expect their information to be properly protected and trust companies to be up to date and prioritize their security.
