Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a model created to explain what Maslow argues are the 5 human needs: physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Technology is undoubtedly a large part of most individuals’ lives, with users getting younger every year; technology is changing the way that we interact with the world. The ability to meet one’s physiological needs can be attained through the use of technology. In specific, people can now meet their physiological needs by ordering their groceries online and having them delivered or receiving tele healthcare. Maslow states that humans next need is safety; there has been an uprise in smart doorbells and security systems that allow people to secure their homes remotely with their personal phones. Social media use plays a big role in both the love and belonging and esteem stages of Maslow’s model. Social media platforms have really allowed individuals to feel connected and develop friendships or relationships online. Additionally, social media can play a substantial role in the development of a person’s self-esteem, and their desire to be recognized. Self-actualization also relates to technology through the use of social media. People want to feel like they contribute to the world in their own unique ways and are striving to reach their full potential.
