CYSE 201S Journal #5

  1. For money: I put this at the top of the list because I think money is one of the biggest motivators of criminal activity whether it be out of necessity, or just because criminals think having a lot of money will boost their social status.
  2. Political Advantage: Political advantage is the next up that makes the most sense to me because individuals have reasoning behind their actions, even if they are illegal.
  3. Revenge: Next, the need for revenge rests heavy in some peoples’ minds as the only fair outcome, so I could see how this could be something that would drive an individual to commit cybercrimes
  4. Recognition: The motivation of being recognized is semi-reasonable because some people just want to feel important or like they fit in.
  5. Multiple reasons (ego): The power or pride an individual might feel when they are able to breach a system could boost their ego which would make it one of the more reasonable motivators.
  6. Boredom: I find it really difficult to understand how boredom could be an individual motivator in breaking the law because there is no reward, but there is high risk.
  7. Entertainment: Committing criminal acts for entertainment makes the least amount of sense to me because it is a different level of crazy to want to commit a crime for the fun of it, again with no advantages and high risk.
