CYSE 201S Journal #10

David Beskow and Kathleen Carly, authors of Social Cybersecurity an Emerging National Security Requirement, explored social cybersecurity and the ways in which it is different from traditional cybersecurity. Social cybersecurity refers to “humans using technology to ‘hack’ other humans”; social cybersecurity creates a divide amongst many social groups. Beskow and Carly mention the Russians use of information warfare to inflict friction and break down trust within our nation making us less unified. By being a less unified nation that is in the midst of conflict with ourselves, we might appear as less of a threat to outsider nations. It was noted how the decentralization of information has been a contributing factor to the divide in our nation due to the flood of misinformation, and how physical presence is no longer required to sway the minds of citizens. This article was a very interesting read, and it brought my attention to the importance of learning about social cybersecurity and making our society more aware of these risks.
