Why Cybersecurity?

In the beginning of my freshman year at ODU my heart was set on Nursing, and I hoped to become a pediatrician. After a couple years of being a nurse and getting some experience in the medical field, I would train and study before going to medical school. However, by the end of my first semester I realized maybe Nursing is not what I want to do for the moment with all I was going through mentally, physically, and financially. As much as I dreamed to be in the medical field, as of now I’m not in the right state of mind to pursue that career yet. As my first semester was coming to an end, I realized that I needed to change my major. I don’t believe in dropping out, I believe in finding new ways to be successful. I began to look into other fields of study and from the research I’ve done on cyber security. I decided Cyber would be my new major. I literally have about 22 hours of screen time by the end of every week. My electronics are a huge part of my life in many ways. With that being said, I want to learn how to protect my device and other people’s devices from viruses and cyber-attacks and I also want to learn how to fix WIFI issues. I hate having issues with my Wi-Fi especially when I need to use my electronics the most. It’s very insulting to hear my friends say I’m the one with the terrible Wi-Fi/connection whenever our facetime is having issues. Although it’s all a joke deep down I really want to prove them wrong and be 10 steps ahead. Cyber may not have been my first choice but I am excited to dip my feet in this field.
