ePortfolio entry #6

Workplace deviance is defined as a deliberate, malicious attempt to sabotage an organization by causing problems within. Workplace deviance is seen frequently in the Cyber field.  There are many reasons why Workplace deviance could occur.  Normally, workplace deviance begins from a disgruntled worker who has been let go and the IT department did not remove their credentials from their station; the former worker now has access and is able to cause harm. Another instance of workplace deviance is when an employee has been given too much access to files that should be hidden from them. Sometimes when an IT professional is setting up the user profiles in GPO, they can tend to give all of the users’ access to other files and folders that should be hidden. For example, a regular employee should not have access to the payroll folder. Only the HR and manager should have access to this information because it can contain sensitive data. This happens frequently in workplaces but this is an easy fix compared to a disgruntled employee. The last reason why workplace deviance could happen is an employee is giving sensitive personal data to someone else in exchange for money or personal gain. There are many signs of this, you could see that your employee is bringing their personal computer to work, they are starting to spend more time in the office on individual projects, they seem standoffish and they have been seen with something that is out of their budget like a brand new car, clothes or accessories. This issue happens a lot in hospitals and banks because a person’s information is sometimes worth a big sum of money. The only way to enforce this issue would be to be strict to policies of allowing personal items into the workplace and to make sure that everyone is only allowed to access what they should be accessing.
