Interview a Health Professional

Dr. Jenee Lewis Walker

Psychology on a Whole New Level

Dr. Walker is a clinical psychologist working for the National Center for Start Program, where she is the Director of Child Mental Health. She graduated from Elizabeth City State University with a double major in special education and psychology. She then returned to Norfolk State for her masters in clinical and community psychology. Finally, after practicing for a couple years she went to Regent University where she received her doctorate degree. During the interview we spoke a lot about the Start program and how that works and her specific role in it. Dr. Walker goes out to different locations to work in starting up the program, but also teaching other psychologists and families.  Occasionally she does practice whether that be out in the field when she goes to different programs across the country, or her own private practice in Henrico, Va. We also spoke on how she gets to help and teach people how to work with and take care of  people suffering from mental illness. A big takeaway from this assignment was how big of an effort people were making to bring awareness to mental health. It feels as if mental health is something everyone avoids and hearing about the Start Program was interesting and hopefully as it gains traction it will become more available to everyone!
