In the past 40 years, sports media has changed and evolved rapidly and largely. From starting off as being headlines in the local newspapers, to being linked to every single social media platform and streaming sites. Over the past five years, the way I have taken in sports media has greatly changed.

Before we talk about how it has changed over the last five years, I think its a good idea to go farther back than that. In the early 2010’s, I was around 7 years old. In my house, there weren’t a ton of cartoons in the morning, it would strictly be ESPN. With a brother being six years older than me, it was hard to get to watch what I wanted to watch, so Sports Center would live on our living room TV year round.

With that being said, going back five years ago, the different forms of content changed drastically, especially through the pandemic in the 2020s. With more time at home, if you couldn’t get or watch a game, there were a large number of fan accounts who would almost breakdown the biggest plays from the game, whether that was through reddit, twitter, etc.  At the time, this was a massive help and game changer for everyone, making you feel that you could almost experience the game, even without viewing it. Along with this, ESPN, Google, Sports Center, and more started keeping live scores on the front pages of their websites, and created applications you could download to follow the score of the game in real time.

Over the last five years, these new updates and posts only evolved. Streaming services completely changed the way people followed sports, with games being in the palms of your hand. We started to get podcasts, livestreams, and videos breaking down sports news, hours after they happened, even with sports gambling sites offering streaming services and real time betting lines, even before some of the streaming services. The biggest thing that has continued to evolve is the speed, convenience, and ways we have been able to receive sports content, with the future having a limitless ceiling. The biggest future installment I could see happening involves the google and meta glasses possibly being able to live stream sporting events and news on the go, with my point being……… The future is going to be awesome!
