For this week’s assignment, we were tasked with watching a full sports game that was either live, televised, or previously recorded, then analyzing it, and breaking it down here. For this assignment, I chose the 2018 Texas Bowl matchup between the Vanderbilt Commodores, and the Baylor Bears. So from here on out, imagine me as your ODU version John Madden or Jon Gruden, giving my breakdown on this under appreciated matchup.

It’s December 27th, 2018, live from Houston, at the NRG Stadium. The Matchup: Vanderbilt (6-6) vs Baylor (6-6). Vanderbilt comes into this game with a ton of momentum, and an offense that has found its groove. Led by one of the best quarterbacks in college football, Kyle Shurmur. This offense has also found a massive spark from transfer running back, Keyshawn Vaugn, who has gone over twelve-hundred yards, while averaging eight yards a carry. Baylor also comes into this game finding their groove, with former Tennessee quarterback Jalen Hurd, who has transitioned to a wideout, finding his groove.

The game opens with Vandy receiving, and it doesn’t take long to strike. On 3rd and 10, Kyle dumps a pass down to Khari Blasingame catching a screen to take it 75 yards to the house. Baylor doesn’t take long to strike either, driving down the field to put up a field goal. When you watch this game, you know pretty early on: This is going to be a high scoring matchup. To save a lot of time, we are gonna quickly go through this matchup, because breaking down every score may make this 14 pages long. Next drive Vandy punts, J. Lovett takes in a rushing TD (10-7), Vandys Vaugh scores on a 60 yard handoff (14-10), Hasty takes in a 10 yard carry for the score, (17-14). From here, I am going to skip to the 4th quarter, just know that this trend continues. At the start of the 4th, it was Baylor 31, Vanderbilt 28. On a wild play, with around 11 minutes left, Vanderbilt’s Randall Haynie picks off Charlie Brewer to give Vandy the ball back. Following that play, Keyshawn breaks another 60+ yard run to go up (35-31). The following play, Baylor’s Trensten Ebner takes the first play 80 yards to the house, with Vandy retaliating with a field goal, putting us at (38-38). From there, Charlie Brewer and the Baylor Bears march down the field with 4 minutes left, and got in the endzone, giving Vanderbilt one shot at a tie. On a 4th and 5, with less than a minute remaining, Kyle Shurmur’s pass to a Jared Pickney curl route can not be hauled in, giving Baylor the ball back, allowing them to kneel it out, and give them a win in the Texas Bowl.

I understand this may be a very strange game to choose, but I was at this game, and let me tell you, you never truly got to sit long. It was the most high-flying game that I have ever watched in my life, and I highly recommend giving it a watch.

Happy March Everybody!
