Major: Nursing
I chose to do nursing because I am very passionate about helping people. I also have a lot of nurses in my family and they have inspired me to become one. There is a huge need for nurses now days especially because of the pandemic. I want to try to bring change and better the medical field.
Experience: So far I haven’t had any experience in the medical field yet, but I do plan on doing internships and working in hospitals in order to gain that experience.
As the semester went on I did a parallel major assignment stating another major I could go into if Nursing didn’t work out.
If I don’t get admitted into my major I plan on changing my major to a B.S. in Criminal Justice. This is an undergrad degree at ODU. An interesting thing about this major is in the classes you will learn about why people commit crimes. You will also get to learn more in depth about the justice system. There are many majors you can also combine with this major. One career that you can obtain with this degree is a First Line supervisor of police and detectives. You will be averaging a salary of $92,000 a year. In this job you are expected to supervise and coordinate activities for the members of the police force. This position is also called a police captain or a shift supervisor. The advisor for this major is Tammey Nielsen. She is located in BAL 1006.
I am very intrigued by this field of study. Ever since I was little, being an investigator interested me. Being able to work with the law seems very cool to learn about. If I end up getting admitted into the Nursing program my goal is to become a forensic nurse that way I can include working with the law and help people as well. In order to gain experience in this field you could intern someone in the certain path you would like to go into. Talk to people who have the degree and see what interests them. You could also shadow someone in a particular field and see the insights on the job.
Classes that are required for this field are Soc 201S and Stat 130 M. These general education classes will be needed as well as English and history. As you go through the years you will also need to have the added on courses in order to have the building blocks to obtain the degree.
