Reflect on the Fall semester and the overall experience of your first semester at college.
Your First Semester
- Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.
I believe i have grown in many ways. I have learned to be independent. I have learned to keep myself accountable with getting my work done. Most importantly I have learned that it is okay to make mistakes and you just have to learn from them.
- What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.
My expectations were that I was going to be so overwhelmed with school work and that I was going to miss home so much but honestly I have found such a good balance ( I also go home almost every weekend.)
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
I wish I had known to study more for chemistry and go to tutoring.
Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
I study so much more now than I did at the beginning. I probably only studied 5 hours at the beginning but now especially with finals, i am studying more than 9 hours a week so around 2 for every class and more.
- How have your study habits changed? I have learned not to study and do work in my bed. I know study at my desk or in the library because thats where i am most productive.
- Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.
I will definitely be using office hours next semester. It is so helpful to be able to ask your professors your questions when it isnt in front of the entire class.
- What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?
I will continue to study in the library and take more detailed notes.
Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
These courses were all drawing connections between our course material and health sciences. In chemistry, we talked about how different subjects related to health science. For example, when talking about pressure and volume we discussed how when breathing, your lungs fill with air which causes the volume to increase and the pressure in your chest to increase as well. In History, we talked about how health sciences were important in American history.
Parallel Plan
- This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
- Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?
A possible parallel major would be Speech Pathology or Nursing. I enjoyed learning about both and could myself do either.
- What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?
If I don’t get accepted into the hygiene program, I have a backup plan. It is a good idea to have a backup plan when applying to hygiene school since it is difficult to get into.
- How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?
They could both benefit my current intended major because they are all similar but also very different. Speech pathology goes along with mainly the same parts of the body whereas nursing is the whole body.
