How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
The emergence of cyber technology has indisputably made it easier to commit acts of workplace deviance.
One of the most prolific acts of workplace deviance emerges from the improper use of corporate resources and misuse of sensitive data one has authorized access to. This is often referred to as the insider threat and can be especially dangerous when sensitive information is common in the workplace. Devious individuals with authorized access to sensitive information may steal, sell, or leak data without authorization for their own benefit. This abuse of privilege can have detrimental effects on individuals, corporations, and nations depending on the sensitivity level of the data.
Increased use of personal devices, such as cell phones, smartwatches, and computers can also create opportunities for workplace deviance by contributing to a lack of productivity. Personal devices can have addicting characteristics, such as social media, that may make them hard to put down. The use of personal devices during work hours leads to distractions and potentially increased workplace deviance.
Data breaches because of improper cybersecurity practices are also a form of workplace deviance. Ignorance surrounding cybersecurity education is a risk all corporations need to mitigate, as they are only as strong as their weakest link in terms of susceptibility to scams. Mishandling sensitive information or being the entryway for a data breach to occur can lead to major organizational damages.
