How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

There are many angles cyber engineers can approach cyber networks to make them safer. Security mechanisms, such as implementing firewalls and authentication systems, help keep data stored in cyber networks secure. Agencies like FIDO work in conjunction with major companies in order to implement improved security protocols for authentication while also addressing shortcomings associated with passwords. Cyber innovations continue to assist with increasing security without compromising accessibility for users.

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

Criminal justice is concerned with seeking out and persecuting those who commit crimes. Traditionally, criminal justice was only involved in real-world crimes, however, it has shifted to account for the cyber domain in which cybercrime occurs. Cybercrime is, at its core, criminal activity conducted via computers. Regardless of how the crime was committed, it warrants criminal repercussions and the same treatment as traditional crimes, regardless of the challenges and ambiguity that surround them.

The overlap of cybercrime and criminal justice directly relates to the disciplines of law and criminology. Law is concerned with the development of prosecutable offenses, and when concerning the conviction of those guilty of committing cybercrimes, a legal framework is needed in order to pursue these criminals.

Criminology relates by organizing those guilty of cybercrimes into typographies; different types of hackers, cyber sex crimes, stalkers, etc. Criminology also explores the nature of cyber victimization and the implications associated with those who have been targets of these crimes. This discipline helps organize various cybercrime phenomena and aids criminal justice in the development of appropriate prosecutions.

Responses to cybercrime require an interdisciplinary approach in order to effectively develop frameworks and processes dedicated to bringing justice to victims.
