- Personal Development: Expand oral and written communication skills.
To expand written communication skills, I will be involved in a large number of email chains to follow what is happening within the 6 departments that involves what I am learning about (i.e., NDA process, recruitment research). From these emails I can learn how to communicate professionally and expand that to other areas of written communication. I will also be researching different companies in the area to compare and observe our competition and partnerships. Through my research I can take note of how written communication between companies takes place as well. For oral communications, I will be subjected to sitting in the office with the leads of each department. I will engage in conservations and observe conversations to learn how to communicate professionally. I will also be sitting in on interviews and will observe the language in the room.
- Skill Development: Learn how to conduct online market research using advanced search capabilities, various business, financial and public data sources.
In regard to government contracting, there are a number of data sources that I will use to browse for contract opportunities. During the internship I will learn how to use these websites for potential contracts that I think fits what our company targets. To price our services per each contract, I will learn how to use financial databases as well. For recruiting I will spend time on various career websites researching possible candidates for the company to fulfill the contract needs. Learning how to use these sources will provide me the opportunity to gain knowledge on how to use key words and tactics to narrow my search whether for recruiting, finance etc. I will also learn how to use public data sources to connect with potential clients and partnerships.
- Academic Learning: Become more knowledgeable in an administrative role.
Becoming more knowledgeable in an administrative role will entail using lessons learned in the classroom and observing how they are applied in a work environment through my time spent in the office. Spending time in the recruiting and human resources departments will give me insight on how to connect with a large number of people and learn how to handle terminations, challenges with employees etc. I will be able to observe how HR and finance handles the currency aspect of the company from budgeting to payroll tasks. During my time in the finance and contract departments I will see how to set up appointments for inspections and the process of inspections whether for security clearances or building inspections. Spending time with the business development team will allow me to learn how to create partnerships with companies and potential employees of interest. By cycling though each department I will also learn how to manage the teams under each section head.
