Pre-Semester Reflection

Please answer the following questions in complete sentences completely.

  1. Transition to college
  2. What are you most excited about for your first semester of college?
  3. What I am excited about for my first semester in college is starting a new journey. Starting this new journey allows me to experience new things in life whether that may be meeting new people, traveling different places, or just furthering my education in the nursing career. This path will lead me to so many amazing things, that will make big impacts on my life and maybe not just mine, but for me to make that impact as well to others. In all, I am very excited to start this new beginning and make memories on this journey.

What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester? (Think about living on your own, time management, procrastination, making friends etc…)

I think my biggest challenge would be my sense of excessive worry and doubt. From middle school, to high school, and now college I’ve always had a challenge with struggling with anxiety and having panic attacks. Due to the new requirements of college and what it consists of, I have to learn to adapt to this lifestyle and understand that things may not go the way I plan and that’s okay, but for me it will take time to manage.

What other time commitments will you have during your first semester (job, sports, student organization etc…)

About how many hours will you spend each week with these commitments?

How do you plan to balance all of these commitments?

I will do student organization, such as events that may be held at the college, events that have to do with the LLC, try to get out and experience some of the fun and activities that go on around on campus. But with this I will do my best to manage with school, especially to put school and anything connected with that as a top priority. Balancing all of this with organization would probably be key, having times set that I may go out and have time set to study, do homework, or anything that may be very important.

In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any?

In high school I participated in a club called FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America) for all of my 4 years in high school. This club has always interested me whether it be competing, traveling or even getting to be around others who enjoy the club as much as I do. Being in this club you get to learn about the difference.

Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience?  If not, why not?

I have nothing in mind at the moment, but I am sure something will come up that I might see soon. I haven’t seen too many of the clubs and organizations around on campus as of yet, but I am sure if I begin to see them around, I will get ideas. I am sure there are clubs for all types of things on campus, especially when the college has events and activities planned.

Major/Career

What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?

My intended major is nursing, I choose nursing because this major means a lot to me. Growing up taking care of the people that I love became a passion for me, I could care all the time if I could whether that being giving medication or just getting someone a glass of water to be as helpful. Just the thought about nursing makes me happy, maybe not too much of the work but definitely the quality of the job itself. Giving care to others, being helpful, and being supportive of any sort to whomever that adult, child, or elder that may be, brings a different kind of happiness to me.

What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?

The skills or abilities that I possess for this major are great qualities such as empathy, respectfulness, and communication skills. Having these abilities with the career choice that I have chosen are all such great qualities to have. Overtime, I had to build up on these abilities in order to go into the field that I chose. Having these skills in the medical field are very important, empathy for the patient gives comfort to them, respectfulness should be given to anyone in any field of work, and communication is definitely key, without these skills being in the medical field would surely be difficult.

What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career?

The experience that I have based on this career is that last year, I had begun a course which was a Certified Nurse Aide course, that allowed me to get a base of what the nursing field would be like. During the course we took tests but the most important thing we did was intern at a nursing home. The Chesapeake to be exact is where we interned to get our experience for a month. First going in it was definitely nerve wracking but after a while it seemed normal. Overtime taking care of the residents and assisting with their needs had been very uplifting, and just to talk to them about their day would make me a happier person, but overall it was an amazing experience.

What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?

My goal in 5/10 years is to become the best Pediatric Nurse I could ever be. I hope to apply myself and get a wonderful job working with pediatrics, getting engaged wherever I may be, helping as many as I can and doing my job well. My goal is to set boundaries for myself, but importantly to never give up, to always think that there is always someone in need of help and that’s my job to help when in need. I strive to be at an amazing workplace, taking care of as many as I possibly can, and providing care in the best way possible.

Study habits

What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?

The biggest difference between high school and college is the weight of each class. The classes in high school and college may not compare the same just because college classes come with being a bit more free. It is based on how you interpret each class, it is based on how you perceive the information, it’s based on you even if you want to put in effort. In high school you don’t have that much space to even try to do any of those things.

Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer.

The difference between homework and studying is that sometimes homework is sometimes just to be done rather than actually understanding the work and getting the use to it, studying is the actual for getting used to it and understanding more in depth of what it mat be. You may get a bit more information from studying than from homework, homework is just an add on, studying is a great advantage to take time to do.

List each class, and tell us how much time you expect to study per week for each class.

***Important note!!! If you are in an online class you will need to spend time “going to class”

and studying. These are two different things!***

Sociology- I will study at least twice a week for about 2 1/2 hours

English Comp-I will study at least once a week for about 2  hours

Interpreting the American Past -I will study 3 times a week for about 2 1/2

Intro to Chemistry-I will study 3 times a week for about 2 1/2 hours.

Chemistry Lab-I will study once a week for about 2 hours.

Where do you plan to study?

What potential distractions can you anticipate?

How do you plan to avoid these distractions?

I plan to study either in the library, the lounge area in the dorm hall, or in my room. These are all pretty amazing places to study and are mostly all quiet, which for me is the best way to focus on studying. Some potential distractions that I can anticipate are to just remove myself, or to put on headphones, or just move to a better area.

What time of day is your best time to study, and why?

The best time of day for me to study would be the evening or later to the night time. I am not sure why but studying during that time helps me memorize things better, and understand the concept more of what I am trying to understand. I usually do better when I am pushed while trying to study, when I push myself to strive for the best, I always come out with a good outcome.

What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?

Some specific study techniques that help me are flash cards, continuously going over what I may be studying. Also for me making a study guide, whether that be quizlet, quizzizz, or just regular flash cards, something that is able to help me engage more and keep pushing forward to do good.
