One of the main ethical issues involved with storing information about individuals electronically is a security breach. Security breaches can threaten organizations or individuals in a variety of ways, such as when financial information is improperly accessed, information about software and other components are accessed, and also for example if a patients health information becomes available that was supposed to remain confidential, it can threaten patient privacy. Another ethical issue that arises is the privacy and confidentiality issue, which sort of goes hand in hand with security breaches in that this is allowing a business to keep information about an individual, but at times the information is shared throughout the organization. This is a privacy and confidentiality issue because there have been instances where someone’s health information was improperly accessed because it was sold for money. A football player had a hand injury after a fireworks accident, and ESPN displayed his health information in regards to his hand on their web site. A third ethical issue that can arise is data inaccuracies, if the data is lost or experiences destruction during a data transfer, then this raises a concern as to whether or not the data about the patient is accurate and has integrity. Inappropriate use of data is another ethical issue that can arise when the information of others is stored online. As mentioned, a football players medical information was inappropriately sold by someone within the hospital he was at and then was displayed by a ESPN reporter. Such other important information can be used inappropriately, such as someone’s financial information, tax information and much more, this can tie into a security breach as well, in that a tax firm or a credit card company may be attacked, and important information about the individual may be accessed in a illegal matter.
