There is actually a big overlap between criminal justice and cybersecurity. As technology continues to grow more and more and become a bigger impact in our lives, cybercrime continues to grow and become more common, which in turn means criminal justice becomes more important. Technology as a whole now plays a big role in criminality, to the point that if you commit an act of cybercrime, you are breaking the law and will be held accountable for your actions through the criminal justice system. One thing criminologists do when looking at cybercrime, is they look at the human aspect of the crime. Criminologists discuss the human factors in regards to cybercrime, and this is already where criminal justice and cybercrime links together. For example, a huge part of cybercrime that intertwines with criminal justice is Digital Forensics. Digital Forensics involves the investigating of any type of cybercrime, such as electronic and computer crimes. Crimes such as bank fraud, identity theft, and cyberbullying all would be crimes that involve the criminal justice system, and are cybercrimes. An instance would be if a security breach occurred, the digital forensics team would be contacted to investigate and then lead the criminal justice response. Another aspect where criminal justice and cybercrime overlap in regards to digital forensics, is that it was partially founded by professionals within the criminal justice systems, and also criminal justice scholars play a critical role in growing Digital Forensics. While cybercrime and criminal justice now overlap pretty well, it wasn’t until 1978 when the first computer laws were enacted by the state of Florida. But as mentioned, as technology continues to grow and become more prevalent in all aspects of our lives, the need for a proper criminal justice system is extremely important in limiting or stopping cybercrime, and also catching the cybercriminals. Many college cybersecurity courses have a section dedicated to criminal justice, as many criminal justice courses have a section dedicated to cybersecurity.
