Cybercriminals

As technology and the internet continues to grow and become more widespread, the ability for cybercriminals to interact with victims grows as well. Most crime previously was committed in person, and when an in person crime occurs, it is somewhat easier to find the offender. Now, criminals who use the web, cybercriminals are what we call them, can at times inflict a lot of damage with a shield on anonymity. In fact, in some situations, cyber criminals can commit more damage than if an in person crime occurred. An example would be a pipeline attack, such as the colonial pipeline attack, in which it caused companies a ton of money and caused a gas shortage for a brief time. Offenders can also stalk and potentially spy on people through the web, such as using hacking a camera on someone’s computer and watching the user, or even using an anonymous profile to add someone on a social media site to spy on them, and then lets say if the person decides to go on vacation, and posts pictures and posts about themselves on vacation, then the offender will potentially know that the victims house may be vacant. Another thing about cyber attacks is the victim may not even know that they have been the victim of a cybercrime until some time later. For example, if an elderly individual had their bank account compromised, they may not realize they have been a crime victim until the next time they check their bank account. Offenders can also be former disgruntled employees, who were terminated from their previous job, and in turn now resent that job. Say if the offender were to commit an in person crime, they would be very likely to face repercussions and the business or entity they may have been a part of would most likely know who it was. Now if they commit a cyber crime, it is actually somewhat likely that the business may think at first it could be an inside job, but regardless or not, the business would have to spend the time and possibly the money changing all their security protocols and it is more likely the offender may not be able to be tracked down.
