During the last 100 hours of my internship with Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, I was able to fully appreciate my involvement in both the Game On Girl! flag football program and the Learning Gardens. My interactions within the organization and community became more fluid and open, as I worked closely with program coordinators, coaches, garden educators, school partners, and fellow interns. In both programs, I served as a supportive mentor and educator, helping create environments that were safe, engaging, and empowering.
In Game On Girl!, my duties included creating weekly lesson plans focused on drills, teamwork, and leadership. I ran practices, organized equipment, and taught wellness lessons centered around confidence, self-care, and sportswomanship. I also offered emotional support to the girls, acting as a positive role model and sister. This experience strengthened my leadership, communication, and mentorship skills, especially as I learned to manage diverse group dynamics. Within the Learning Gardens program, I supported after-school garden education by helping students plant, harvest, and explore nutrition through cooking lessons. I maintained garden beds and taught concepts related to food sustainability and healthy eating. I gained more knowledge in environmental health, nutrition education, and the value of accessible fresh foods in community wellness.
Additionally, I also completed organizational responsibilities, like data tracking, attendance logs, supply management, and participation in developmental meetings. These tasks increased my understanding of program evaluation, coordination, and public health implementation at the community level. Overall, the final 100 hours of my internship allowed me to grow as a future health professional by improving my leadership, adaptability, communication, and program planning skills while contributing to meaningful public health initiatives.
