Organization Information
Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is a nonprofit organization located in Richmond, Virginia, that offers innovative programs that promotes children’s health and wellness through physical activity, nutrition, and community-based education. Game On, Girl!, is a current innovative that highlights gender gaps in physical activity by empowering adolescent girls to move, lead, and thrive. This program works to build confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong healthy habits through fun and engaging physical activities, like soccer, dance, basketball and more. Additionally, the Learning Gardens program teaches children gardening and nutrition education by integrating hands-on activities and promoting health eating. All Greater Richmond Fit4Kids programs follows their values, including: possibility, excellence, persistence, equity, and collaboration.
My Duties and Responsibilites
As an intern with Fit4Kids, I will be apart of the Game On, Girl! and Learning Gardens programs, which will include both direct engagement with students and outreach community support. Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Research engaging lesson plans that are most beneficial for adolescent youth.
- Lead active, high-energy afterschool programming for elementary and middle school girls.
- Assist Garden Educator with afterschool programming and engaging with all students.
- Create a supportive environment where students feel safe, confident, and connected.
- Collaborate and advocate with staff to create more outreach designs and program support to further provide for the Richmond area.
Preceptor Background
My internship preceptor is Sam Clavel, B.S. in Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science. She currently serves as the Game On, Girl! Program Coordinator at Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, a position she has held since August 2021. Sam has several years of experience in the health and youth wellness field and is certified in Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and Concussion Prevention (CDC Heads Up). In her role, she oversees program planning, curriculum development, coaching, and outreach to ensure the success of the Game On, Girl! initiative.
