How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
There are dozens of ways in which modern technologies have created opportunities for workplace deviance, some of which I myself have been guilty of engaging in, at some points in my life. Surely the most common thing that new technology has directly caused is “cyberloafing” the act of using work hours for personal internet browsing, or scrolling on social media, watching YouTube videos when you are supposed to be writing emails is no doubt all too common. In relation to this misuse of company recourses is also a large new problem, employees could misuse company computers or systems for their own personal gain this could include unauthorized downloading of software, illegal file sharing, or using company resources for side businesses. Another deviant issue that may arise in the workplace due to new technology is cyber bullying. Online platforms provide avenues for cyberbullying and harassment within workplaces. Employees may use email, instant messaging, or social media to harass colleagues, spread rumors, or engage in hostile communications, creating toxic work environments. Additionally, data theft and sabotage are issues that are far more possible and common in recent times due to new technology. Today’s cyber technology enables unauthorized access to sensitive company data or intellectual property. Employees with malicious intent can steal confidential information, manipulate data, or sabotage systems, causing significant financial and reputational damage to organizations. One thing that could be used by the company against its employees are surveillance technologies and monitoring software, bringing up the issue of invasion to privacy, unauthorized monitoring of emails, internet usage, or electronic communications without clear policies can lead to ethical and legal concerns. Addressing these challenges requires proactive measures such as implementing clear policies on technology use, providing cybersecurity training, fostering a culture of ethical behavior, and deploying strong cybersecurity measures. Companies must balance leveraging cyber technology’s benefits with mitigating its potential downfalls to maintain a productive work environment.
