This meme reflects the value of obtaining a thorough case history prior to making decisions about a client’s need for therapeutic services. Just because one factor, such as being a late talker, is frequently connected to speech and language challenges, it most definitely is not the only contributing element. Other factors, including the ones that the boy in the photo has been identified with, may contribute to speech and language challenges to the same degree and must be fully considered.

School-Age ASD Case-Based Project – SMART Short-Term Goals
Background Information: The following short-term goals were created based on a brief video of a school-aged boy. During the video, the boy provided some facts about himself. I observed the minimal length of his utterances and decided to formulate goals that would help him to speak at a level that aligns more closely with his age and grade level.
To improve vocabulary, the client will use possessive pronouns in complete sentences with 80% accuracy given moderate prompting during 3 out of 4 sessions for 6 months.
To improve vocabulary, the client will express a want or a need in 5-6 word utterances with 80% accuracy given moderate prompting during 3 out of 4 sessions for 6 months.
To improve vocabulary, the client will use conjunctions in compound sentences with 80% accuracy given moderate prompting during 3 out of 4 sessions for 6 months.
