- Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.
Privacy, Confidentiality, Security, Integrity are all issues when storing electronic information about individuals online. Privacy is a big issue because of who has availability of the data stored. If the data is public and is visible for everyone to see this is a risk to that person if they do not know. Even if intended themselves only if someone can find that data then all of it can be compromised. Confidentiality of data is another issue. Confidentiality for an example I will be using a doctor/patient. Data and information between a doctor and their patient is supposed to be strictly between the two, but if stored online others have a chance to access that information as well. This can be good or bad for example if a doctor needs to see medical records from that patient or payment type from that patient for further treatment then it is essential for the doctor to store that type of information. However since the data is stored online they can be easily transferred to someone or somewhere else such as a USB or a online service. Also if that data is corrupt or if the network is experiencing problems then that data will not be accessible electronically and they will have no data from that patient and is harmful for both the patient and company. Security is an issue because of malicious hackers trying to harm others financially or for their own benefit. If a system is hacked then all information stored electronically can be at risk to loss or even used as ransom or just stolen. Once the information is stolen the individual is at great risk for fraud and other crimes that can be committed with information to an individual. Integrity is the last point but is still very important. If the integrity of data is changed or modified in any way the data is no longer reliable and can cause harm to oneself. If the information isn’t true to itself then all the data is at risk for being false or can even be involved with identity theft.
