Greetings instructor Carrie Emerson-Coyle,
This semester in ENG 110c, was a great experience as well as refresher of my writing knowledge. It reinforced prior knowledge as well as freshly learned material. I am confident that this course will connect with future courses and my major. It provided knowledge for courses and experiences that will help me become successful.
Outside of the class, I had many experiences that related to what I have learned in this course. For example, I personally help my younger sister with her forensics oratory speeches. I help her with her grammar, her description, and citations. Also, I help her focus on her purpose and assist her on targeting her preferred audience. Not only that but I use my gained knowledge when communicating with my sister away in college. Things like how my day went, the kind of food I ate, or how I am feeling are easier to describe. Relating to the memoir we wrote, it helped me recognize how properly to “tell a story”. Knowing she is not home with me, it is easy to give good descriptions of everything that happened. Also, in the process of writing the food review paper I gained even more great description. Watching videos of well-known food reviewers describing the food they are familiar with gave me a layout of how to describe items in detail. Not only did we describe the food but also the environment.
Other courses that played a part in this learning experience would be my ethics course as well as my visual arts course. In my ethics course, we were heavy on writings and papers. It was a must for us to refer to our text book and online sources to do our writings then cite them. Although we did not use the same citation style (MLA, we used Chicago style), and it gave me more practice of citation for English class. With my visual arts class, we had analysis papers. These analysis papers were heavy on description of art pieces with also reinforced my sense of writing this semester. We were told to take a picture of the art and describe it to our instructor as if she was right in front of it.
Everything learned in this course could be of use in later courses and future career. It prepared me for more advanced writing classes like ENG 211. The main things I could take from any writing course would be the practice of citation, writing techniques, types of writings being written to fulfill the audience (persuasive, informational, etc.). We integrated communication in this course by adding pictures to our papers. For example, the food review it was extra credit it we were to add a picture of the meal we were reviewing. We were also given the opportunity to make an advertisement. This would encourage me in the future, when writing anything (that is being described), to add a visual of it.
Honestly to tie this whole learning experience in one semester up, it was not too difficult. One thing was to be able to keep up with the readings and weekly journals. They were not difficult but took a little time to keep up with it all. Doing the assignments earlier than the deadline was helpful. Along completing assignments early, I had a weekly calendar to keep me up to date. It was extremely helpful and productive, not only for this class but others.
Sincerely,
Adedoyin Adeleke
