Assignment Takeaway

Assignment 5 Takeaway

This past assignment “Pay it Forward” was one of my favorite assignments in this course yet.  I really liked how this assignment pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to branch out and help others.  I use to think that “paying it forward” meant spending money to help someone else, but over this past week I learned that wasn’t always the case.  I learned that you can pay it forward by simply holding the door open for someone or letting someone in during a traffic jam.  This past assignment was so relevant to how I need to start slowing down in my life and take the time to help others even when I don’t think I have that time to give.  As my job consists of serving and waiting on people I usually get burnt out of “helping” others when I am not at work.  This assignment reminded me to take that time and focus more of helping others outside my job because you never know when that person you helped may be the person you need help from later on.

This assignment also really resonated with what I have been practicing at home and that is mindfulness.  Mindfulness to me is being aware of your own actions and taking the time to reflect on them.  I choose to represent this assignment with the word mindfulness.

Assignment 4 Takeaway

Assignment four was very interesting for me.  I got to learn a lot about how I am in relationships and where my relationship stands in relation to the Styles of Love questionnaire.  Love is a tricky thing to describe, but I really liked how the questionnaire broke down love into six specific types/sections.  This helped me answer the questions more in depth.  This assignment allowed me to see areas where I should personally work on in my own relationships.  This questionnaire is a simple, but effective way to easily access your love, love interests, or life-long partner.

Assignment 1 Takeaway

Assignment one taught me a lot about the different heuristics and the way that we use them to make quick decisions and analogies for situations.  Assignment one covered four different heuristics: representative, availability, anchor and adjust, and lastly status quo.  I learned how each type is used to make decisions and the problems alongside using them.  During the artifact assignment I learned that availability and representative are the most commonly used types of heuristics in media.  This assignment was very relevant to me because I personally did not know what a heuristic was before this and now I have the knowledge to be more aware of them.  For example, I can be more aware if I am using a heuristic when at work to problem solve.

I chose to screenshot an image from the “Are we scaring ourselves to death” youtube video.  This image shows kids getting on the school bus and is talking about how school busses rarely have seat belts that are in use anymore.  I chose this image because it really reminded me about how much growing up I was told to always wear a seat belt in order to stay safe in a moving vehicle, expect for when I was on the bus.  I feel like by telling kids to always buckle up, but not having the same rule for when they are on a school bus is an example of a representative heuristic.

I chose this image to reflect back on how the media and availability heuristics intertwine.
